It is Sunday in late April. When I got up at 7 o’clock, the sun had just started to climb over the horizon. The morning concert of songbirds in the backyard was in full swing. In Europe, this time of day is the closest you can come to the sound of a tropical rain forest. With this exception: instead of parrots and toucans, Europe has robins, chickadees and nightingales.

The morning air is still moist and cool. Every single blade of grass is loaded with dew. I am sitting behind the house absorbing the warm morning sun [...] Continue reading Morning Dew

When we moved into a country cottage last August, one of the first things we did was to set up a few mouse traps. Reclaiming the abandoned house from the wild was a success. After only a few days we caught several mice of different sizes. The job was done and the house was ours, or so we thought.

It was much later that we noticed a sole survivor. Afraid of baby mice popping up all over the place, we reset the traps and were sure we would get that one fast. But that last mouse was [...] Continue reading Tom has gone too far

Whether or not you know what Twitter is, I bet I have a few facts you didn’t know. According to Wikipedia, Twitter is a free social-networking and micro-blogging service that enables people to send and read messages up to 140 characters long. That’s not much, but in todays fast moving world, many people don’t have time to read much more. Like other social networks, you can follow and connect with people.

So what is twitter good for? There is no way I could list all uses. So I’ll just mention a few. You can use Twitter to stay in touch with [...] Continue reading What the heck is Twitter?

Setting up some rules in your MySQL database can save you some programming time. This tip will show you how to make a combination of two columns as unique. Suppose you have a database that records BookTitles and Authors. Just having the Author field unique would not make much sense as every Author can have more than one book. But you also don’t want to have an Author / BookTitle combination entered twice. So here we can make the combination of Author and BookTitle unique.

Execute this MySQL statement to make 2 colums unique:

ALTER TABLE TableName ADD UNIQUE (Column1,Column2);

Replace “TableName” with [...] Continue reading MYSQL: How to make a combination of 2 columns unique

Entlang der alten Wege

Today I will share with you: the only French poem I have written. Since I live in France at the moment, I think it’s appropriate to start with that one. I wrote this poem over 10 years ago while learning French in school. I recently published a whole book of my poems. Most of them are in German though. A few are in English. I am sure to write more poems (probably in English) some day. At the moment I work too much to have poetic juices flowing.
