Life-chaning event
Think about your life right now. What do you think would have to happen for it to totally change your life? What would have to happen for you to quit what you are doing now, tell your boss to shove it, buy a boat and sail the ocean? If you are already asking yourself if I have lost my mind, keep on reading. This will be fun and I am just getting started.
So back to the question of what needs to happen. In 2007 I have had so many bad things happen that any one of them somehow changed my life and could fill a book on its own. But that’s not what this post is about. This is about what happened to make me want to get a boat and sail the ocean blue.
I was WWOOFing in Canada and stumbled across a free store. Gotta love Canada! If you’ve never heard of such a thing, don’t worry. I hadn’t either. A free store is basically a recycling center that lets people bring in items that can still be re-used before they need to be recycled or trashed. Instead of opening a second hand-store, these recycling centers give this stuff away for free. How cool is that? It is awesome and works especially well in small island communities. I’ll write more about those free stores in future posts.
On an earlier trip to the free store I had picked up a nice wooden boat building magazine. This was more or less for entertainment. It sure would be an interesting project to build a nice wooden canoe or jonboat, but who’s got all the time and tools and money? On another trip I was happy to find some sailing magazines. Did I mention fishing magazines? Great! More entertainment, I thought. Five of those sailing Magazines were Latitudes and Attitudes by Bob Bitchin. And that is when it happened. The magazines are so awesome, I said to myself: “Daniel, you have to get a sailboat! You have to sail the ocean!”
There you have it, a few magazines can change your life. There were certainly other factors involved that kept me dreaming about a bigger boat, some day in the distant future, and some day even more distant in the future, sailing the ocean. But I would say that the Lats and Atts magazines did it right then in a matter of a few hours reading them. Thanks Bob, for publishing such an awesome magazine and changing my life. If something goes wrong, can I blame Bob? Probably not, but now I am on a mission. There are tons of things to learn about sailing, and I gotta get a sailboat. Now keep your eyes and ears open so you don’t miss your life-changing event!
