What the heck is Twitter?

Whether or not you know what Twitter is, I bet I have a few facts you didn’t know. According to Wikipedia, Twitter is a free social-networking and micro-blogging service that enables people to send and read messages up to 140 characters long. That’s not much, but in todays fast moving world, many people don’t have time to read much more. Like other social networks, you can follow and connect with people.

So what is twitter good for? There is no way I could list all uses. So I’ll just mention a few. You can use Twitter to stay in touch with friends. The short messages called tweets are public. Anyone can read them on twitter.com. Twitter is one of the fastest ways to spread news. By using keywords called hash tags, tweets can be labeled. No list of uses would be complete without mentioning spam and marketing. Twitter has a lot of spam. But there are ways to avoid most spam. Twitter is very mobile. You can send twitter messages with your cell phone as well as from your home computer. With twitpics you can even send photos from your cell phone to twitter. News simply can not be reported faster than that!

Here are some interesting Twitter facts in no particular order:

  • even Obama has a Twitter account
  • women outnumber men on Twitter
  • Brazil ranks 5th in Twitter users despite not being English speaking
  • More than half of Twitter users use something other than twitter.com to tweet, monitor and manage their tweeting
  • 5% of Twitter users account for 75% of all activity
  • 21% of users have never posted a tweet
  • 85.3% of all Twitter users post less than one update per day
  • there are over 250 (and counting) twitter copycat websites

There are a lot of services out there to make using twitter easier. These services are either other websites that provide a different user interface for twitter or they are software to download and run on your computer. Some of those are free and some cost money. Some promise to add thousands of users to your follower list, others promise to make you thousands of dollars by tweeting affiliate links. Many of those automations will eventually result in your account being suspended. Twitter does not allow the use of software to automatically tweet or add/remove followers. Still, many people use such software.

There is a lot more to learn about Twitter that I can write in one article. Whether you are a new tweeple or an experienced twitter guru, the list of twitter uses and interesting twitter facts is endless. You can find a nice and free twitter online course on urlchef.com/twittercourse/ to continue to learn more about twitter and its uses.

Twitter is still evolving and will be around for a long time. No matter what you do online, I am sure there is a way you can use twitter to your advantage. Some universities even use twitter for research. What will you use twitter for?

MYSQL: How to make a combination of 2 columns unique

mysqlSetting up some rules in your MySQL database can save you some programming time. This tip will show you how to make a combination of two columns as unique. Suppose you have a database that records BookTitles and Authors. Just having the Author field unique would not make much sense as every Author can have more than one book. But you also don’t want to have an Author / BookTitle combination entered twice. So here we can make the combination of Author and BookTitle unique.

Execute this MySQL statement to make 2 colums unique:

ALTER TABLE TableName ADD UNIQUE (Column1,Column2);

Replace “TableName” with the name of your database table. “Column1″ and “Column2″ are your column names.

Hope this helps.

Happy Programming!

Less is more!

Less is more, minpins rule :)

Less is more, minpins rule :)

I come from years of automated advertising-infested auto blogs. Don’t hold that against me. This is my real non-automated blog! But I am a programmer and still think of ways to use my programming experience to make my computer and non-computer work load easier to manage. I wrote my own to-do list script and I am also using several of my own programs to keep up with certain stats I care about. That saves me a lot of time.

So back to the auto blogs I had. I could care less what content was posted. All I cared about was what ads you clicked once you got to my page. In fact, there were more ads than real content. You were supposed to not find or care about the content and click away through an ad.

Things are different on a personal blog. Yes, I still have ads, but my main objective with my personal blog is not selling or advertising. I want you to actually read what I have to say. These are posts I wrote myself and care about. I am more interested in you reading them and leaving a constructive comment. That makes me happy and encourages me to keep writing. I love writing by the way. And I want you to come back and read more.

This morning I got up and remembered the $0.95 I had made in AdSense a few days ago. That was cool on its own because it was from my real blog. But this morning I had another comment from a real person. That made me really happy! And I started thinking of what to post today. I ended up posting one of my poems. I had some issues with formatting the poem and noticed that I still had too many ads on my blog. So I removed the ad I had between the title and the blog post. After all, once you come to my blog, I want you to read my post and not click away after reading the head line.

I will still keep a few ads here and there and I will shamelessly advertise my own products :) like the poetry book. But I will only do so in appropriate places, not cluttered all over my site. So I think less ads will make you enjoy my site even more and come back for future posts. Have you subscribed to my posts yet? OK, I just had to try. Enjoy fewer ads and more content!

Une poésie en français

Entlang der alten Wege

Entlang der alten Wege

Today I will share with you: the only French poem I have written. Since I live in France at the moment, I think it’s appropriate to start with that one. I wrote this poem over 10 years ago while learning French in school. I recently published a whole book of my poems. Most of them are in German though. A few are in English. I am sure to write more poems (probably in English) some day. At the moment I work too much to have poetic juices flowing.

Pauvre Enfant
by Daniel Garber

l’enfant a crié
aucun animal est dans le pré

les colleurs ils sont disparu
tout est gris
l’enfant n’a rien reconnu

Twitter – To follow or not to follow?

To follow or not to follow?

Shamelessly advertising my own twitter account :)

I am not sure if I should admit this, but… ahh… lets just say I have followed a lot of people. OK, lets make this more clear. I have been a Twitter whore and followed anyone. I later found out that many of the “people” I followed were not even real people. They were just bots, as in automated twitter accounts. So I was following everyone and everything, sounds gross, doesn’t it?

Within a week or two I had over 1000 followers. But I was also following about 2000. I thought the more the better. But that was wrong. I had missed out on some really nice direct messages that I received. By not responding to them, I lost real people who followed me. For some reason I never had a Britney bot follow me, but now that I know what it is, I don’t want that anyways.

I am not sure what eventually changed my mind on this, but all week I have been trying to clean up my twitter account. And while I am still following over 500, I am already starting to see the benefits of NOT following everyone and everything. I got encouraging comments from real people for my sailing projects. I messaged with another flash programmer in South Africa, someone told me the weather in Australia, and I found interesting new blogs. I am in control of my direct messages now!

Many accounts were easy to un-follow. The spam accounts are so obvious. They have marketing user names, send a ton of links and never reply to messages you send them. As soon as you un-follow them, they will un-follow you. Then there are accounts who are obviously real people. Should I un-follow them? For now, yes. I will un-follow almost everyone who I either don’t know, haven’t talked to or who doesn’t have a website listed that looks interesting to me.

If I un-follow you, don’t be offended! Oh and don’t un-follow me! On Twitter you sign up to give and share! You don’t get anything after you sign up. You have to tweet and give useful information. So, go ahead and give! At the same time, if you find someone “giving”, go ahead and follow, even if that person does not follow you back right away. Twitter is not about mutual following. It’s about sharing your thoughts with whoever wants to follow you.

It would be really nice though if Bob Bitchin would follow me back!:)

If you really want someone to follow you, go ahead and follow them. Then give and re-tweet some of their cool stuff and message them, but don’t spam or get annoying. Get to know them, show them you are giving too! And sooner or later they will follow you back. And if not, that’s OK because you follow them to get their tweets, not to get followed back!
